The photograph we think is from the 1920’s showing the Indian River Garage?
We would be curious about any stories about the building that was the Indian River Garage, later another well remembered clothing store, and now the restaurant Ossorio. Email us at cvnews 'at' coocoavillage.com or call 321-633-4990 with informaion

The photograph is of a parade marching west on Harrison Street with the well remembered Rubin’s Brothers shop and it’s signage on the right of the picture. The photographs was found as a copy in the archives of the Florida Historical Society. The quality of the image were less than other archive photographs that are original, but the content is interesting because it shows a view of downtown Cocoa around the 1930’s for the parade.  If you have more information on this photo please contact us.

On the right side is the Kershaw Insurance Agency and the Hob Nob dining room. Did you notice that the intersection of Brevard Avenue and King Street has a traffic light in this picture? Joanne Moore. She wrote a note telling us , “ I think this was in the 1940’s. It is the Elks float what won a prize in a parade. I think the Diamond T. Trucks automobile dealership was on Florida Ave.”

We had several calls about the May/June Mystery Photo when it was published again in the next paper.  The car dealership was located where the Almost Antiques Mall and Factory Street Market is now. Bill Bailey sent us this information about the photo in an email. “I was a senior (1947-48) in Cocoa High School on Forrest Avenue where the Cocoa Town Plaza is now located. Mr. Chet Hoyt was the shop teacher, and with his assistance we assembled in the school shop my design of a “split orange” using plywood covered with orange crepe paper. A metal support pipe was used to support the top half of the “orange”. Local girls sat in the bottom half. The float, sponsored by the Elks Club, was entered in the Orange Jubilee Parade competition and did win a prize. Prior to Bill Cavannaugh taking the photo, the wind almost destroyed the “orange”. The photo was taken on the south side (I do not remember the name of the street) of J. W. Hooper Motors on Florida Avenue.”

The only answer to photo was from Sara Fellows. She wrote in an email, “Yvonne P. Thornton and I were discussing this photo and decided it was taken looking South at the intersection of King St. and Delannoy Ave. The old brick City Hall is on the right of the photo & Travis Hardware on the left. You can see that a car has just crossed the old wooden part of the bridge to Merritt Island going West on King St. “They used to have dances in the big room, with a stage at one end that was over the City Hall. The C H S class of ’56 had our Sixth Grade Valentine Dance up there! Our teachers were Mrs. Wineburg & Mrs. Daniels. We just celebrated our 50th Class Reunion during the Mosquito Beaters 21st Reunion! “Thanks for sharing all the great memories with so many! I often send one of these C V newspapers to friends far away & they really enjoy them also.”

Historical Photo for January-February 2006

Volamae Brinkley emailed this information about the January/February photo:
Looking north about where Strawberry Patch is located now - on the west side: GMAC Finance - Alderman’s Dept Store - Better Foods Grocery (Newsome’s) and across the street to the Masonic building with a view of the old Cocoa Town Clock in the foreground. Campbells’s Drugs on corner of Harrison and Brevard- Bennett’s Men’s store - Bailey Jewelry-and directly across from the Finance Co was the clay tennis courts. Looks like this must have been taken in the mid 40’s. Depending on the time frame some of these business locations may have moved, but this is close!
When we answered her email and told her she was the only person to send an answer for this photo she sent this information, “This has really been a point of discussion among some other “old timers”. The location is correct...But Lois and Lowell Gray seem to remember the “Loan Co.” as being owned by a man named “Robinson” - and then Jones Pharmacy and Murdocks’s Grocery on the corner. Across the Street on the E. side were the clay tennis courts that are where Bank of America is today. Alderman’s Clothing was about where Trafford Realty is today on Brevard Avenue. I worked for Provost Office Equip. (formerly Fields Grocery) where Champagne Taste is located now. Everything else is the same except we can’t remember when MURDOCK’S Grocery became BETTER FOOD...or in reverse!!!!! Depends on the year the photo was made! It’s been fun trying to remember when!” She later sent a PS with, “The name of the “Loan” was “ACCEPTANCE CORP. OF CENTRAL FLORIDA”.
