The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse is a Direct Support Organization of Brevard Community College. The programs are sponsored in part through the Brevard County Board of County Commissioners Cultural Grant through the Brevard Cultural Alliance.
History:
| On August 18, 1924, Cocoa's first "talkie" movie house opened as the Aladdin Theatre and became known as the "showplace of the Indian River Section". Several owners and several decades later, the building was purchased by the City of Cocoa and renamed the Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse. In August of 1984 the Playhouse was acquired from the city by the Brevard Community College District Trustees. The College immediately formed 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and appointed a charter board of directors to operate it. Retaining the city's building name, the Cocoa Village Playhouse, Inc., the board of directors was given the responsibility of restoring the theater and operating it in the community interest. In 1989, the playhouse began a series of community based productions featuring local performers. The seasonal series has since expanded to four large musical productions and one professional touring group per year. Hundreds of local performers audition each season, hoping to become a part of the playhouse series. | Founded in 1992, the "Stars of Tomorrow" youth program now has over seventy participants. The "STARS" have their own performance series which includes a summer program for kids known as, "Friday FUNday"! The Historic Cocoa Village Playhouse was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1991 and is now a shining example of the desperate need to restore our past to better serve our future! |
